Retirement Income Planning in Orange

Savings are not the same as a paycheck. We help you build a monthly income from what you have saved, using annuities and life insurance where they fit, and we walk through every rule, fee and deadline in writing before you commit.

What retirement income planning involves

Most people arrive at retirement with money spread across several places: a 401(k), an IRA, some cash, perhaps an older whole life policy with cash value. Retirement income planning means deciding which dollars to spend first, which to protect, and how much can come in each month without running out.

We handle the insurance part of that picture. We check whether an annuity could fill a gap between your fixed costs and your Social Security, and whether your current life coverage still does what you bought it to do. We also say so when a product is not the right answer.

Retirement contracts carry rules that count: surrender periods, free-look windows, how withdrawals are taxed, and California suitability requirements for annuity sales. We explain each in plain terms so you understand exactly what you are signing up for.

What we go through together

  1. 01

    Income gap worksheet

We put your fixed monthly expenses beside your expected Social Security and pension income. The gap between them is the figure the rest of the plan is built on.

  2. 02

    Comparing annuity options

Fixed, fixed indexed and income annuities work very differently. We compare payouts, access to principal and surrender charges on a single page so the tradeoffs are clear.

  3. 03

    Reviewing policies you already own

An older whole life or universal life policy may have cash value you can use or a benefit worth holding on to. We read the contract with you before anything is changed or replaced.

  4. 04

    Timing of withdrawals and taxes

Money drawn from an IRA, a non-qualified annuity and a policy loan is each taxed in its own way. We outline the general order of withdrawals and suggest you confirm the details with your tax preparer.

  5. 05

    Checking beneficiaries and forms

We make sure the beneficiaries on each contract reflect your current wishes and the forms are complete, since an outdated designation can override your will.

Signs it is time to plan your retirement income

  • Retirement is within five years

This is the window when choices about Social Security timing and guaranteed income have the most effect. Waiting until the last paycheck narrows the options.

  • Your savings sit in one account

A single balance with no withdrawal plan makes it easy to spend too fast early on. A structure for monthly income helps it last.

  • You hold a policy you no longer understand

If you own life insurance bought decades ago and are unsure what it is worth or still costs, it deserves a careful read before retirement.

  • Market swings keep you up at night

If a down year would force you to cut spending, part of your income may belong in something with a set payout.

  • Someone is pressing you to switch contracts

Replacing an annuity or policy can trigger new surrender periods. A second, unhurried look before you sign is worth having.

How a planning engagement runs

  1. 1

    A first conversation by phone

We talk through your timeline, your expenses and what you already own. There is no paperwork at this stage and no product on the table.

  2. 2

    Gathering your statements

You share recent account and policy statements. We read the contract terms, including surrender schedules and any riders, so the plan starts from real numbers.

  3. 3

    A written income plan

We put the income gap, the options that could close it and the rules attached to each in writing. You see costs, restrictions and alternatives before any recommendation.

  4. 4

    Application and disclosures

If you decide to move forward, we complete the application with you and go over the required disclosures line by line, including the free-look period that lets you cancel within a set window after delivery.

  5. 5

    Delivery and annual review

When the contract arrives we review it against what was proposed. After that, a yearly check keeps beneficiaries and income on track as life changes.

What affects the cost of a retirement income plan

We charge nothing for the conversation or the written plan. What you pay depends on whichever product you pick, if you pick one, and the terms in that contract. We show you those terms before you decide, not afterward.

Kind of contract
A basic fixed annuity generally has fewer internal costs than one with income riders attached. Every feature you add carries its own price inside the contract.
Length of the surrender period
Longer surrender periods often pay higher credited rates but give you less access to your money. We put the year-by-year surrender schedule in writing.
Riders you choose
Lifetime income or long-term care riders carry yearly charges. Some clients need them and others do not, and we explain which applies to you.
Age and health
With income annuities, your age at purchase changes the monthly payment. With any new life coverage, health and age shape the premium.

Questions about retirement income planning

Must I buy an annuity to work with you?

No. Sometimes the plan shows that Social Security and your savings already cover your expenses. When that happens we tell you, and you still keep the written plan.

What if I have second thoughts after signing?

California gives annuity buyers a free-look period once the contract is delivered, and it runs longer for buyers 60 and older. In that window you can cancel and get your money back under the contract terms. We mark the exact dates on your paperwork.

Can I get to my money if a surprise expense comes up?

Most annuities permit one penalty-free withdrawal a year, often a percentage of the value. Bigger withdrawals during the surrender period carry a charge. We show you both numbers before you choose, and we often recommend keeping some savings outside the contract for emergencies.

How does this work with required minimum distributions?

Annuities inside an IRA remain subject to required minimum distributions after you reach the required age. We set up income so those withdrawals are built in, and we recommend checking tax details with your preparer.

Is it worth keeping my old life insurance policy?

Frequently, yes. An older policy may cost less than a new one at your age today. We compare it with options such as whole life insurance or universal life insurance before recommending any change.

Do you work with clients outside Orange?

We do. Our clients come from Orange and nearby cities like Tustin, Villa Park, Santa Ana and Irvine, and much of the planning can be done by phone.

Know your monthly number before you retire

A short phone conversation is enough to see where your income gap stands. We will tell you what we find and what the rules are, then you decide what comes next.
