Universal Life Coverage in Orange

Universal life offers permanent coverage that can change with you. You can adjust what you pay and, within limits, what the policy pays your beneficiary. We set it up with care, place the guaranteed figures next to the projected ones, and explain the rules that keep it in force.

Permanent coverage with room to adjust

Universal life combines a death benefit with a cash value account. Every month the insurer deducts the cost of insurance and policy fees, then credits interest to the balance left. Put in more during strong years and the account grows. Put in less during a tight year and the cash value can pay the charges for a time.

That flexibility is the main reason to pick it, and the reason it needs attention. The cost of insurance goes up with age. A policy underfunded early on can run out of value later and lapse right when your family would rely on it. We design the premium schedule to prevent that, and we explain plainly what would cause it.

It fits people who want coverage beyond what a term policy offers but need more give than whole life allows. Business owners, people whose income varies and those planning around an estate often choose it.

What we take care of when setting up your policy

Picking the right version
Guaranteed universal life secures coverage to a chosen age and holds little cash value. Current-assumption and indexed designs build more cash value but rely on credited rates. We lay out that tradeoff and suggest the version that matches your goal.
Going through the illustration together
Each illustration shows a guaranteed column and a non-guaranteed column. We cover both line by line, so you can see what happens if credited rates fall short of the projection.
Staying within the tax limits
Federal tax law caps how much can go into a policy during its first seven years. Exceed it and the policy turns into a modified endowment contract, which changes the tax treatment of loans and withdrawals. We set your premiums with that limit in mind.
Getting beneficiaries right
We help you list primary and contingent beneficiaries and confirm the wording reflects your wishes, including trusts or business partners when relevant.
Yearly policy reviews
Universal life needs ongoing attention. Each year we look over your statement with you and point out any gap between the projection and the actual results.

When universal life is worth a look

  • Your term policy is ending

If you still need coverage as a term policy approaches its last years, renewal rates can climb sharply. A universal life policy can carry the protection forward on terms you choose.

  • Your income moves around

Commission earners, seasonal businesses and self-employed clients often prefer a premium that can flex. Universal life allows that, as long as the account stays funded.

  • You are planning for estate costs

Coverage that lasts for life can give heirs cash to settle taxes or debts without selling property or a business in a hurry.

  • An older policy may be underfunded

Policies sold years ago at high projected rates sometimes fall short now. If your annual statement shows the cash value shrinking, it is time for a careful review.

What shapes your premium

Universal life costs more than term for the same coverage amount, because it is built to last and to hold cash value. Within that, the price depends on a handful of factors we can explain on the phone. We give you the numbers in writing so nothing comes as a surprise later.

Age and health

Younger, healthier applicants receive better underwriting classes. Tobacco use and certain medical conditions raise the cost of insurance charges for the life of the policy.

Coverage amount and duration

A larger death benefit costs more. A guarantee to age 121 costs more than one that ends at 90.

Policy type

Guaranteed universal life usually has the lowest premium for lifelong coverage. Indexed and current-assumption policies cost more upfront because they are designed to build cash value.

How you choose to fund it

Paying more early builds a cushion that can absorb lower payments later. Paying the minimum keeps costs down now but leaves less room if rates fall.

How we work through it with you

  1. 1

    Start with a phone call

We learn who relies on you, what you earn, what coverage you already carry and what you want this policy to accomplish. Nothing needs to be settled before you hang up.

  2. 2

    Illustrations side by side

We prepare illustrations at a few premium levels and show the guaranteed and projected results for each. You see exactly when each version would stay in force and when it would not.

  3. 3

    Application and underwriting

The insurer reviews your health history and may ask for a paramedical exam, usually done where it suits you, including your workplace. We tell you what to expect at each step and keep you updated until a decision comes back.

  4. 4

    Delivery and the review period

When the policy is issued we go over the final contract with you before you accept it. California gives new policyholders a free-look period to cancel for a refund, and we point out where that is written in your contract.

Plain answers before you sign

Is universal life or whole life the better choice?

Whole life holds a single fixed premium and grows cash value on a schedule the insurer guarantees in the contract. Universal life lets you increase or reduce payments and change coverage over time, but more of the result rides on the rate the insurer credits each year. If you want every figure locked in from the start, whole life is usually the fit, and our Whole Life Insurance page covers that option.

Can permanent coverage still lapse?

Yes. When the cash value cannot pay the monthly charges, the policy lapses unless you put in more money. Guaranteed universal life prevents this as long as each scheduled premium is paid on time. We review your statements every year so any shortfall shows up well before it causes trouble.

What does modified endowment contract mean?

It describes a policy that took in more money during its first seven years than federal tax rules permit. The death benefit remains tax-free, but loans and withdrawals get less favorable tax treatment and may face a penalty before age 59 and a half. We keep premiums below that limit unless you have a reason to go over it.

Can I take a loan from the cash value?

Once enough cash value builds up, you can take loans or withdrawals. Loans left unpaid lower what your beneficiary gets, and big loans can move a policy closer to lapse. We show you the impact before you borrow.

Will you review my older universal life policy?

Gladly. Request an in-force illustration from your insurer, then call us and we will read it with you. Many older policies need a premium change to stay in force, and finding out now is better.
